The University of Melbourne Archives (UMA) houses one of the largest business collections in Australia. Contained within our remit is a rich source of history about the origins of trade and industry in Australia, dating from colonial times to the mid twentieth century, substantive collecting areas include mining, architecture retail, manufacturing, shipping and industry.

Much scholarly work has already been completed utilising the collections; including academic investigation into topic areas as diverse as the early experiences of our pastoralists, wool markets, early Melbourne retail and fashion, life insurance, Australian manufacturing industry and the growth of local mining companies into global corporations.

The purpose of this site is to promote our new acquisitions and share research findings and stories about our existing collections.

UMA also aims to promote and stimulate discussion and comment about its collections and invites researchers to submit proposals about their use of our business holdings and advise on trends and news. Please forward all enquiries, news and proposals to the University of Melbourne Archives contact: mbarrie@ unimelb.edu.au
