W.L. Baillieu, began his entrepeneurial career in property and real-estate, during the 1880s Melbourne land boom. When the land boom turned to bust a few years later, Baillieu did not let this dampen his ambition and he founded his new company W.L. Baillieu & Co which had broader business interests in mining, stockbroking. It was at this time that Baillieu formed close alliances with companies such as Carlton & United Breweries, Yarra Falls and Melbourne Electric Company to name a few. The story about Baillieu’s influence on Melbourne’s business and economic community can be found in Dr Peter Yule’s article ‘Searching for a Forgotten Life: W.L. Baillieu in the Archives’ which seeks to reveal some of the more obscure details concerning the extent of Baillieu’s social and business connections, which have contributed much to Melbourne’s continued economic and business prosperity. Dr. Yule’s research was conducted using the rich source of records contained in the Baillieu family collections held at the University of Melbourne Archives.
